A man has appeared in court charged with murdering a pensioner in his home.

Malcolm Ballantyne, 72, was found dead at the property in Glebe Place, Saltcoats, North Ayrshire, on August 21.

James Lee Nolan, 32, was charged with murder during a private hearing at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court today.

He made no plea or declaration and also faced two charges of theft, the Crown Office confirmed.

The case was continued for further inquiry and he was remanded in custody ahead of the next expected court appearance later this month.
