Glasgow's Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Edinburgh's National Museum have been named the best museums in Scotland.

Edinburgh's National Museum of Scotland was ranked the sixth best museum in the UK in Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice awards, with the Kelvingrove coming tenth.

The winner was London's National Gallery, with the capital boasts five of the country's top 10 museums on the list.

The British Museum came second, followed by the Victoria and Albert Museum in third place.

The ranking was based on an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews for museums over the past year.

New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art was ranked number one in the world, while the Musee d'Orsay in Paris came top in Europe.

London's National Gallery also took fifth place in the continental ranking.

Chris Gottlieb, of the mayor of London's promotional organisation London and Partners, expressed his delight at the capital's performance.

He said: "We look forward to welcoming visitors from around the globe to experience the world-renowned culture and incredible history and heritage that makes the capital the most popular destination on earth."
