Police Scotland has launched a murder inquiry following the death of Sean Banks (18) in Uddingston.

Just after midnight on Saturday, September 12, police received a report of an 18-year-old man being injured in North British Road, Uddingston. Emergency Services attended and the victim was taken to Monklands Hospital where he later died.

A post mortem examination will be carried out in due course, however detectives are treating the death as murder.

Sean’s family said: “We have suffered a traffic loss. Sean will be sadly missed and we would ask that everyone respects our privacy at this time.”

From enquiries carried out so far, detectives have identified that Sean may have been involved in a confrontation with a group of youths in North British Road possibly near to the tunnel which passes directly underneath the M74 area prior to his death.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Boyd from Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team said: “Around 10.40pm last night there were a number of youths who were near the entrance to St John the Baptist Primary School in North British Road and we believe that Sean may have been involved in an altercation with someone from this group. We are studying CCTV from the surrounding area and would appeal to anyone near the school or in North British Road at this time to contact us. “A local man has been murdered and I’m sure that local residents will be shocked by that news. However I am sure they hold the key and I am appealing to them to contact us with any information, no matter how trivial it may seem, please pass it on to police.”

Anyone with any information or knowledge of the crime is asked to contact detectives at East Kilbride Police Office on the non-emergency number, 101. Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where you can give your information without giving your name.
