Joined Labour at 17. MP for Don Valley in South Yorkshire since 1997. Former equal opportunities officer for Lambeth Council. Shadow Energy Secretary. Held several ministerial posts. Resigned as Europe Minister from Brown’s Government, claiming he treated women as “window-dressing”.

MP for West Bromwich since 2001. Ex-trade union officer. In 2006, resigned as Defence Minister after signing letter urging Tony Blair to step down as PM; day before letter, visited Gordon Brown’s Scottish home but claimed was delivering present for Chancellor’s son Fraser, insisting no politics were discussed. Was Labour’s campaign chief but quit over row about claims of Unite entryism in Falkirk candidate selection. Raised profile over stance on phone hacking and child sex abuse scandals.
