Police are investigating the death of a bird of prey believed to have been illegally killed.

A red kite found by a member of the public close to Tomatin, near Inverness, last month had to be put down a week after being taken into the specialist care of the Scottish SPCA when its health deteriorated.

Police said that following an examination of the red kite - a protected species - the death does not appear to be due to natural causes and a wildlife crime investigation is being carried out.

Ian Thomson, head of investigations for RSPB Scotland, said: "It is very disappointing to hear of yet another incident of raptor persecution in this area.

"It is thoroughly depressing that in 21st century Scotland, there are still those who have a Victorian attitude towards birds of prey, as well as a criminal disregard of the law.

"The continued targeting of our raptors is a stain on our country’s reputation and has no place in modern Scotland.

"I urge anyone who has information about this incident to contact the police as soon as possible."

A Police Scotland said: "Anyone who lives nearby or may have frequented the area during outdoor pursuits and activities and may have information regarding this crime or any offences against birds of prey is asked to contact police."

In August figures showed that 14 red kites were illegally killed in Scotland last year.
