The SNP have tabled a motion in the House of Commons to congratulate Wayne Rooney on becoming England's all-time top scorer.

Douglas Chapman MP put the idea forward after the footballer's goal against Switzerland saw him surpass Sir Bobby Charlton as England's top scorer.

The motion by the MP for Dunfermline and West Fife soon gained the support of seven other SNP representatives, the Conservative MP for Worthing West and the Belfast East DUP MP.

The proposed motion said: "That this House warmly congratulates England international footballer Wayne Rooney on his achievement of becoming England's top goal scorer of all time."
