Each of the 50 plaques will feature a stamp connected to the village, town or city, ranging from Edinburgh to Alloway, Dunblane to the Scottish Borders. Other sites include London, Leeds, Llandudno and Blackpool.

Seven stamps are in Scotland, with famous faces including Andy Murray, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns being celebrated. Other landmarks are are Edinburgh Castle and a Glasgow tram while St Andrews has a plaque celebrating golf and the Beano comics are marked in Dundee.

Stamps on the postboxes elsewhere include images of Winston Churchill, Bagpuss, Dylan Thomas, Robert Burns, the Giant's Causeway, York Minster and Sherlock Holmes.

Andrew Hammond, director of stamps and collectibles at Royal Mail, said: "The UK's towns and cities have influenced stamp designs over the past 50 years. At the same time, our iconic red postboxes have formed memorable landmarks across the country since 1852."

Over 2,600 special stamps have been included in the programme over the past 50 years, with every new stamp design approved by the Queen before it is issued.
