POLICE investigating the discovery of badly decomposed human remains are working to establish whether they are male or female.

The inquiry began after workmen made the grim discovery in undergrowth near the disused site of a former Hoover factory in Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire.

The scene, which is thick with vegetation, was cordonded off in Dale Avenue in Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire, as forensics worked gather evidence. Detectives were immediately called, but it is too early to say whether belong to a man or a woman.

The remains were still at the scene last night (wed) as detectives attempt to establish an identity and a cause of death.

Police would not comment on how long the remains had been at the site.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Police Scotland can confirm that enquiries are underway following the discovery of human remains found at Dale Avenue in Cambuslang on Tuesday April 7.

"Further examination of the remains will be carried out and a search of the area is currently underway.

"Officers are conducting enquiries to establish the identity and circumstances surrounding the discovery."

The secluded spot is a cul-de-sac and lies near to a distribution depot.
