ONE of Glasgow's youngest councillors has gained support for creating an equal minimum wage for all adults in Scotland.

Baillieston councillor Austin Sheridan put forward the motion at the SNP Party conference in Perth yesterday.

The accepted motion supported more powers for Holyrood to have control of the minimum wage, and raise it closer to the living wage including pay for apprentices.

Mr Sheridan said: "When I turned 21 in January, I was able to go from earning £4.98 to £6.31 an hour. I don't feel this is acceptable. Minimum wage should be the living wage.

"It is clear that Westminster are not serious about giving people the living wage, it's clear that we need powers here in Scotland."

City MSP John Mason backed the motion, saying it was "clearly discriminatory" to pay a 16-year-old a lower wage than older colleagues for the same work.
