AFTER waiting 70 years for recognition, Warrant Officer Lawrence Knowles became one of the first Scottish RAF veterans to receive the Arctic Star.

Mr Knowles, known as Pat, was given the newly commissioned campaign medal at a ceremony at RAF Lossiemouth.

Mr Knowles accepted the honour from Group Captain Ian Gale.

The moment was greeted with a huge sense of pride by his family. Grandson Robbie, said: "I was exceptionally proud to have been present at this very personal and historical event."

Mr Knowles's son, Scott, added: "I was honoured and proud to be invited."

The Arctic Star is awarded for service within the Arctic Circle by members of the British Armed Forces and the Merchant Navy during the Second World War.
