YOU'VE got to pity the neighbours.

Policeman Danny Fleming is never one for a quiet night in - after amassing the world's biggest collection of bagpipes.

The 50-year-old, who is originally from Arbroath, has been playing the pipes for more than 40 years and has a staggering collection of 105 sets.

The police officer, who now lives in Grimsby, has spent more than £130,000 on the blaring pipes but is forced to keep deafening practice to a minimum at home - to the relief of long-suffering wife, Jane, 41, and son Logan, nine.

Mr Fleming, who spent 24 years playing for the Scots Guards, and now plays in Humberside Police's pipe band, said: "I saw Trooping the Colour on the television when I was a kid and thought the bagpipes were amazing.

"I started playing for the local band and, after six months, my dad bought me my first set. I have loved and collected bagpipes since."

Mr Fleming has been told there is no Guinness World Record for the biggest collection of bagpipes so his haul of 105 is to be officially recognised as the world's biggest.

He gets his instruments from manufacturers in Scotland and England, on eBay, specialist bagpipe websites and often through word of mouth.

Mr Fleming said: "Some of my bagpipes I bought new and some are very old, my oldest set are from 1918 and therefore very rare. My most valuable set of bagpipes is worth more than £12,000.

"I swap pipes every few weeks, so I get to enjoy playing all of my collection."

His wife Jane said she was baffled by his obsession.

She said: "It is absolutely ridiculous the amount of bagpipes Danny has. He can only play one set at once.

"We're lucky we've got understanding neighbours."
