AN airline is to base a fifth plane at Glasgow Airport as it expands its services.

Jet2.com, which began operating at the airport two and a half years ago, will offer more frequent flights to some of its most popular destinations, including Palma, Alicante and Tenerife, after bookings rose by 86% year-on-year.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: "Jet2.com joined Glasgow Airport at what was a difficult time for the industry but it showed tremendous commitment to, and confidence in the west of Scotland market and we now find ourselves in the position where Glasgow is its largest Scottish base.

"It has continued to add capacity, create jobs and provide passengers with greater choice."

Steve Heapy, chief executive officer of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said the airline had more than tripled its range of destinations since it began flying out of Glasgow and now operated routes to 24 locations. It will offer 650,000 seats next summer, a rise of 130,000.

The airline has also created 123 jobs this year.
