GOLF fan Richard Yates always planned to rent out his two spare rooms at the house he shares with wife Jo in North Berwick, five miles away from the Open venue.

But, after being inundated by pleas from people for accommodation, the couple rented out their own bedroom and moved into their double garage along with their two dogs.

Self-employed food and drink consultant Mr Yates said: "We had a couple of rooms let out but the phone kept ringing from people getting more and more desperate to find anything so we said let's just let them have ours and we can move into the garage."

A sports journalist, the father of a golf coach and a couple from England have moved in for the duration.

Mrs Yates took a week off her work as charity marketing manager to help accommodate the influx.

Mr Yates added: "We'll be taking them to and from the course and making them cups of tea.

"It's going to be great."

He declined to say how much he was being paid per room but it is understood some people elsewhere were charging up to £200 a night to fans for a single room.

East Lothian Council said the tournament will generate 100,000 commercial bed nights for the area.
