A visit to Stirling Castle has been included on a list of the top experiences in Europe in a new Lonely Planet guide.

The free ebook names the attraction alongside iconic sights and cities including the Coliseum in Rome, the Alhambra in Andalucía, Crete, Barcelona and Paris.

Europe: 40 Amazing Experiences is published to mark the travel guide firm's 40th anniversary.

It suggests visitors "lay siege to Stirling Castle", saying: "The location, architecture and historic significance combine to make it a grand and memorable sight."

Stephen Duncan of Historic Scotland, which cares for the castle, said: "I am delighted to see it recognised as one of the 40 best experiences in Europe."

"From the stunning views from the ramparts to the recently-refurbished Royal Palace, the Great Hall and the Stirling Heads Gallery, a visit to Stirling Castle is indeed an unforgettable experience."
