THERE were mixed fortunes for Dunfermline brother and sister Ken and
Allison Wood at the Bank of Scotland Scottish Hard Court Tennis
Championships at Dundee's Games Club yesterday.
While 24-year-old Ken staged a remarkable recovery, upsetting
defending champion Jason Barnett to lift the men's singles for the first
time, 26-year-old Allison was beaten in straight sets by clubmate Alison
Reid in the women's final.
Barnett, a clay-court specialist, had started as firm favourite and
when he established a 6-2, 4-2 lead it looked as though he was set to
add the hard-court crown to the indoor title he won in February.
However, Wood reeled off the next three games to lead 5-4 but was
broken to 15 in the eleventh game, leaving Barnett to serve for the
match.
The 19-year-old Aberdonian, making his competitive comeback after
having broken an ankle in February, had struggled with his first serve
throughout the two-and-a-half-hour battle and squandered a match point
in the twelfth game as the Scottish No.3 broke back to force a
tie-break, which he pocketed 7-3.
There were a couple of early breaks apiece in the third set but it was
Wood's break in the seventh game which proved crucial as he served out
to love in the tenth for a 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory.
Reid -- whose toughest test had been against full-time junior Jennifer
Duncan in the semi-final -- adapted quickly to the slow blaes court and
used her consistent baseline driving to score a 6-1, 6-2 victory in 58
minutes over Wood. Results:

yesterday's semi-final of the Masters event in Ohio. The Scottish No.1
went down 6-7, 7-6,

rise from 347 to around 260 when the lists are updated this week.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
