ONE of Scotland's most experienced newspaper executives, Mr Clive

Sandground, collapsed and died yesterday while walking in Byres Road,

Glasgow.

Mr Sandground, 60, was editor of the Scottish Daily Express for

several years until resigning in 1973, then Sunday Mail editor until

1981.

He resigned after what were described as major editorial differences

but three days later became features editor of the Sunday Standard a

week before its first issue. After it folded, his posts included

executive editor of the Scottish Field, and publicity consultant with

the Edinburgh Festival, before joining the PR firm Melville Crawford

Associates.

Mr Sandground is survived by his wife, four sons, and three daughters.
