TWO international backs, Craig Chalmers and Tony Stanger, return to
the South XV for the McEwan's 70/- district championship final against
Glasgow at Melrose on Saturday (2.30).
Both caps missed the 37-13 win over North and Midlands at Riverside
Park on Saturday. The Melrose stand-off was in South Africa playing for
a World XV last weekend whereas the Hawick wing had a hamstring injury.
To accommodate them Graham Shiel switches from stand-off to inside
centre, Gary Parker moves over from the right wing to the left, and the
Gala pair, Brian Swan and Chris Dalgleish, drop out. It is indicative of
South's strength in depth that they can omit the 19-year-old Dalgleish,
who scored two tries on his district debut on Saturday. South team:
M Dods (Gala); A G Stanger (Hawick), S A Nichol (Selkirk), A G Shiel,
G A Parker; C M Chalmers, B W Redpath (all Melrose); G R Isaac (Gala), J
A Hay (Hawick), H A Hunter (Gala), R R Brown (captain), G W Weir (both
Melrose), D J Turnbull (Hawick), C D Hogg (Melrose), J P Amos (Gala).
Replacements -- D W Hunter (Selkirk), G H Oliver, B L Renwick (both
Hawick), K W Barrie (Jed-Forest).
Another capped back, Andy Nicol, resumes as the North and Midlands
scrum half for the district championship's third-place play-off against
Edinburgh, the first leg of the Greenyards' double-bill on Saturday
(12.30). The Dundee High captain replaces Stirling County's Andrew
Imrie.
North and Midlands have three other changes with the introduction of
Bruce Doney and Martin Waite and the recall of Jim Mathieson. Doney, the
Gordonian centre, replaces Nicol's Dundee colleague, Paul Rouse, who is
injured, but the two pack changes are unenforced. Waite, Dundee High's
former Scotland under-19 cap, displaces David Mitchell, the Edinburgh
Academical flanker, and Mathieson, Watsonians' No.8, deposes Brian Bell,
the Highland lock. North-Midlands XV:
S A D Burns (Edinburgh Acads), captain; G Stirling (Stewart's Melville
FP), B Doney (Gordonians), R J S Shepherd, J F Swanson (both Edinburgh
Acads); B R Easson (Boroughmuir), A D Nicol; J J Manson (both Dundee HS

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
