THE former High Court Judge, Lord Maxwell QC, died in hospital on
Sunday, aged 74.
A native of Dalbeattie and the son of Commander Desmond Maxwell RN, he
was educated at Wellington College in Berkshire, Balliol College, Oxford
and Edinburgh University.
During the Second World War, Peter Maxwell served in the Argyll and
Sutherland Highlanders and the Royal Artillery.
He was called to the Bar in 1951 and was appointed a member of the
Scottish Law Reform Committee in 1954.
Peter Maxwell took silk in 1961, became Sheriff Principal of Dumfries
and Galloway in 1970 and was elevated to the Bench in 1973, bringing the
number of Judges to 20 for the first time.
He was appointed a member of the Royal Commission on Legal Services in
Scotland which reported in 1980 and became chairman of the Scottish Law
Commission in 1981, serving for seven years.
Lord Maxwell is survived by his wife, Sue, son Desmond and daughters
Jacky and Mary.
