A last for Jordanhill College

its last annual in-service awards ceremony last night.

Dr James McCall, Acting Principal of Jordanhill: ''This will be the

last awards ceremony to be organised and hosted by the college, and

although some in the audience may regard that as a matter for regret, I

must stress that the staff and students are looking forward to the

merger in a most positive fashion.

''It will provide for the first time in Scotland an opportunity for

the largest number of students on both pre and in-service courses to

work for awards within an integrated university framework.''

He added: ''The new enlarged university should therefore be in a

position better to meet the increasing demands placed on the many

professions which the Faculty of Education, and indeed the whole

university, will wish to continue to serve.''

Dr McCall said that there had been fears that because of new

in-service funding arrangements, the college would not be able to

provide its former range of activities at the right cost.

''I am delighted to report that not only has the college continued to

thrive in these uncertain times, but that it now offers more courses,

and these are taken by more individual students than in the recent past.

''That we have an increasing number of students undertaking an

increasing range of courses seems to me to indicate that, at the very

least, the college is providing a sevice which is badly needed in the

West of Scotland,'' he added.

Three students -- Sheila Semple, John Mair, and Diane Watt --

graduated with the degree of M.Phil, the first time the degree has been

awarded at the college.
