capital prize: Edinburgh was presented yesterday with an MTV music award, something normally reserved for pop and rock icons.

The award also recognised Scotland's contribution to the making of the recent MTV Europe Music Awards. It is the first time such an award has been presented to a city and country.

The distinctive MTV Europe Music Award was presented by Simon Guild, chief operating officer, MTV Networks Europe, to Frank McAveety, tourism minister, and Lesley Hinds, Edinburgh's lord provost.

Mr Guild said: ''We were staggered by the incredible support, the high level of local expertise and the warm welcome we received from everyone in Scotland.

''We believe that the 10th MTV Europe Music Awards was one of the best MTV shows ever made, anywhere in the world.''
