A FAMOUS brush shop in Edinburgh has been put up for sale after 130 years at the same site.

It is understood Robert Cresser's traditional store in Victoria Street in the Old Town is being sold after increased competition from supermarkets, and parking difficulties in an area where shops are reducing in number were blamed for a downturn.

The shop provided brushes recently for Mary Reilly, the Julia Roberts film shot on location in Edinburgh, and has also had famous customers such as Tony Blair and Rod Stewart. Its range of hundreds of brooms and brushes have attracted international recognition, and featured in a book written about Europe's finest shops alongside Valvona and Crolla, the Leith Walk delicatessen.

Stephen Gilhooley and Gary Turner, the store's owners, are hoping a buyer will want to keep the store open.

The site is being sold for (pounds) 180,000 and the business at (pounds) 12,500.

Stewart Saunders, the selling agent, said: ''It affords a unique opportunity for an enterprising new owner to re-energise the brand and greatly expand its range and turnover.''
