THE world of wonders that is contemporary computer composition is given its fullest expression on K ieran Hebden's fourth album as Four Tet, which absolutely raises the bar for one-man laptop sound generation. If you imagine that you know what the genre sounds like, think again. The sound palette employed here is enormous, including some of the most astonishing use of drum synthesis (the press release description of Sun Drums and Soil as "a real showstopper" is, for once, not an exaggeration) . The inf luences at play here are innumerable, but fans of hip-hop, free jazz, avant-rock, and mighty metal din will all find something to latch on to. Then Four Tet will whisk you elsewhere. It's a helluva trip.
