A FORMER Rangers captain has been questioned by police after being accused of racially abusing a taxi driver.

Craig Moore is accused of directing racial insults at the 35-year-old Asian driver in the early hours of NewYear's Day in Glasgow. The incident is said to have happened while the player was waiting in a taxi queue in the city centre.

The 29-year-old, who was sold by Rangers earlier this week, allegedly made the comments in Royal Exchange Court, near Queen Street station. Moore, nicknamed Oz, signed an 18-month deal on Monday, to move to German club Borussia Monchengladbach.

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that a 35-year-old taxi driver has made a complaint against a man for racially abusing him. It is alleged that the incident took place at around 3.30am on Saturday, 1 January 2005 at Royal Exchange Court near to Queen Street. Police inquiries are continuing."

Moore fell from favourwith Rangers boss Alex McLeish last summer after deciding to play in the Olympics for Australia instead of the Champions League. The defender's decision to spend the month in Greece instead of Glasgow saw him stripped of the captaincy and placed on the transfer-list.

The Australian - thought to have earned Pounds20,000 a week at Ibrox - was made captain in 2003 after Barry Ferguson left for Blackburn.
