IT'S certainly novel. JK Rowling last night announced she had decided on an unusual name for her new baby daughter: Mackenzie.

The Harry Potter author, who gave birth on Sunday, chose the Scottish clan name for her second child with Neil Murray. The couple, who have homes in Edinburgh and Perthshire, said they were delighted with their "ridiculously beautiful" daughter, whose full name is Mackenzie Jean Rowling Murray.

They already have a 22month-old son, David, and Rowling has an 11-year-old daughter, Jessica, from a previous relationship.

On her website, Rowling said: "Neil and I are absolutely delighted to say that our new daughter arrived on Sunday evening. Her name is Mackenzie Murray (middle names Jean Rowling) and she is ridiculously beautiful, though I suppose I might be biased."

Although the author refused to say why the couple chose the first name, the Clan Mackenzie Society of Scotland and the UK called it a "very nice compliment". Hugh Courtney, vicepresident, said: "It is a lovely idea. I think it might just catch on."

Last year, Mackenzie rose 35 places to enter the top 100 most popular names for boys in Scotland, at 93. This may be due to Mackenzie Crook of The Office, the TV comedy.

Famous members of the Mackenzie clan include Sir Alexander Mackenzie, the explorer, and Sir Compton Mackenzie, the author.
