Glenorchy created history on Saturday with their first win in the final of the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup, shinty's oldest competition.

To do it they overcame Inveraray, chasing a third win in four years. On the immaculate Strathclyde Police pitch at Lochinch, Stuart Campbell got Inveraray off to a flyer in 11 minutes but John Smith pulled one back shortly after.

Inveraray played the better shinty but the game soon developed into a tetchy, fractious affair. Their defence started to look ill at ease, though splendid goalkeeping by Graham MacPherson kept them in the hunt.

Veteran striker John Smith shot Glenorchy ahead four minutes after the interval and from then on, Glen looked the likely winners.

Inveraray's effort was further diminished after 79 minutes when internationalist Garry Macpherson was sent off, shown a second yellow card and a red one for an astonishing display of petulance.

Meanwhile, the north leagues look set to end in controversy after the postponement of two vital games on Saturday. Lovat failed to raise a team to play Kilmallie, while the latter failed to send a team to Aberdeen University.

Kilmallie get the points in division one, and the students likewise in division two, which means Lovat are relegated. According to the rules, action should be taken against teams failing to fulfil fixtures. With these two matches both having a direct bearing on relegation and championship issues, an inquiry and further fall-out is sure to follow.
