JUNIOR CUP
Arthurlie............... 4 Pollok.................. 0
PUTTING all their eggs in one basket paid off for Arthurlie yesterday when they won the Scottish Junior Cup for the first time since 1937 by hatching a first-half steamroller that swept Glasgow rivals Pollock aside.
A delighted Arthurlie manager Jim McQuade said: ''We had put all our eggs in the one basket this season by aiming for this trophy - and it has come off.
''But I never thought that it would work out this way. Those two early goals meant the tie was over after the first half hour. Pollok are a dangerous side if you let them dominate you, but I am proud of the way my players got on top and stayed there.''
The Barrhead club may have had to wait 61 years to collect the OVD trophy, yet how easy their Glasgow neighbours Pollok made it for them. Indeed, Arthurlie were well on course for celebrations inside the first 30 minutes as they went two ahead and then Pollok added to their own embarrassment with a needless red card for midfeilder David Elliot.
Elliot naively fouled David Fulton on the edge of the Arthurlie penalty area in front of referee Colin Hardie on the 37 minute mark, then foolishly hand-clapped the referee as he waved a yellow card. A second yellow was followed by a red.
With only seven minutes gone Arthurlie took the lead when their 20-year-old attacking left-back Mark McLaughlin volleyed off keeper Ronnie Lowrie's left- hand post and into the net for the opener. Then a bending 20-yard drive from John Millar - the man of the match - in 29 minutes added a second.
It was no surprise when 10-man Pollok went further behind with Steven Convery adding a third in front of the 4751 fans.
Arthurlie brought on Stevie Nugent, their longest-serving player, who fired home a fourth nine minutes from time.
To round off the day the Barr- head side also lifted the award for the top-scoring team in the tournament with a total of 27.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
