qdefending champions Lothians got off to a flying start in the Scottish Area Team Championship with a 7-2 win against Stirlingshire at Duddingston yesterday.

The home side lost the opening foursomes tie, former Scottish amateur champion Simon Mac-kenzie and Mark Timmins going down on the last green to Ben Genese and Kevin McArthur, but they quickly recovered, and did not lose another tie all day, Stirlingshire's other point coming via two halved singles.

The knockout style of previous years has been replaced by a group format and Lothians were joined at the top of Group C by Renfrewshire who beat the North 7-2. In Group D, Perth and Kinross defeated Clackmannan, 7-2.
