SCOTTISH actress Daniela Nardini was named best actress at the Bafta television awards last night for her hard-nosed character in the cult drama This Life, writes Craig Watson.

However, actor Robert Carlyle, who was nominated for Hamish Macbeth, was pipped to the best actor title by Simon Russell-Beale for his part in the epic A Dance To The Music Of Time.

David Jason's detective series A Touch Of Frost was pronounced the public's favourite as it took the audience title at the Bafta Television Award ceremony.

The show, featuring Jason as the unconventional detective, took the first Lew Grade audience award at London's Prince of Wales Theatre.

It was the top choice of viewers and readers of Radio Times, beating competition from perennial favourites like EastEnders and Coronation Street.

Dame Judi Dench, who was successful in the Bafta film awards last month, was also denied the double.

Dame Judi, shortlisted for As Time Goes By, lost to Steve Coogan and his I'm Alan Partridge series in the best light entertainment performance category.

Coogan's show also picked up the award for best comedy programme.

Largs-born Nardini beat off competition from Kathy Burke and Miranda Richardson for the title.

She picked up her prize for her part as ambitious solicitor Anna in This Life.

She said she had been amazed to win the award and added of the event: ''It's bizarre, I'm still taking it in.''

She added that her success in the programme had not prompted a surge in acting offers.

''Just because you win something doesn't mean you're right for everything. There's a lot of actresses in the world.''

Glasgow documentary film-maker Ross Wilson was beaten to the prestigious Flaherty award by Channel Four's harrowing insight into the work of forensic archaeologists in Croatia.

Mr Wilson was nominated for Scottish Television's two-part fly-on-the-wall record of Mr Gordon Brown's election campaign and early days as Chancellor.

American sitcom Friends was named best international show at the awards ceremony, which will be broadcast on ITV tonight.
