Squash:

In recent years, a concern within Scottish squash has been the drop-out rate among promising young players. So it is encouraging to have Edinburgh Sports Club's Sally Morton reverse the trend.

Morton played for Scotland at Under-16 and Under-19 level before a combination of circumstances relegated her racket to the cupboard. At the end of her school years, she suffered from the debilitating illness, ME, and then she had discovered new interests and priorities during her four years at St Andrews University.

But, back in Edinburgh, she returned to the game, and earned her reward for some serious hard work on court this season with selection for the Scottish A team. She is also a member of the Sports Club's team that won the Scottish National league.

''I'm really enjoying being back in the game, although I am surprised that I made it back into a Scottish team so quickly,'' said Morton, now 24. ''But I'm lucky because there are so many good players at the Sports Club.''

There is certainly little doubt that being able to call on internationalists Laura Hamilton, Helen Macfie and Lisa McKenna as regular practice partners has helped Morton regain her form and enthusiasm. Having completed a post graduate degree in Human Resource Management at Edinburgh University, Morton is now working for Hastings International, the company of former British Lions Captain Gavin Hastings.

''Having had the break from the game has probably done me good because I'm now keener than ever. We'll wait and see how it goes in squash, but getting into the A side was a good first step,'' she added.
