BRINGING his side to Ibrox to play in Ian Durrant's

testimonial last month has turned out to be one of Ron Atkinson's final acts as Sheffield Wednesday manager.

The 59-year-old has left Hillsborough only six months after returning for a second spell at the club, prompted by the sacking of David Pleat last November

Wednesday announced that Atkinson's contract would not be renewed when it expires on May 31, despite his success in preserving their Premiership status.

In a statement issued yesterday afternoon, the club said: ''The board would like to put on record their appreciation of his efforts since November 12, 1997.

''The board have given extensive consideration to future appointments and the development of the club's resources in line with other premier league sides. It is their intention to restructure the team management with a long-term development plan.''

Speculation has linked Barnsley manager Danny

Wilson, a former Owls midfield player, with the Hills- borough post.
