British Men's League

qCity of Edinburgh found their first fixture in the British League First Division as depressingly tough as had been predicted and finished eighth and last, 17 pts adrift of Birchfield Harriers, writes Sandy Sutherland.

They were left a few individualistic crumbs of comfort at Watford on Saturday. In particular, Martin Hendry must have had satisfaction in inflicting a first defeat on the Scottish record holder, Ken Campbell, (Thames Valley) in the 110m hurdles, Hendry clocking 14.66 sec to Campbell's 14.74 sec, though both trailed Damien Greaves (Newham and Essex) whose time was 14.43 sec.

Ian Horsburgh was third in the 400m in a season's fastest of 47.75 sec, while Tom Nimmo was second in the B race in 48.68 sec to make the one lap one of City's better events.

Dave Allan threw his best this season of 60.48m in a high quality hammer event won by Belgrave's Dave Smith (70.94m) while Borderer Steth Hayward (Sale) was second in the shot with 17.21m, well down on his season's opener of 17.99m.

qSCOTTISH champion Fiona Lothian, a sports lecturer from St Andrews University, gained the applause despite finishing a close second in the European Duathlon championships at Pulawy in Poland yesterday.

The winner, Elaina Peterkova from the Czech Republic, disqualified for drug-taking and just reinstated this year, won in 2hrs 9min 06sec for the tough course of 10,000m opening run, followed by a 40km cycle stage and a final 5000m run. She overtook the Scots girl with just 2000m left of the final stage. Lothian who was just 34 seconds behind, led an all Scottish trio to victory in the European team championship, supported by Helen Cawthorne, an Anglo-Scot from Derby who finished eleventh and Eleanor Reid (Dumfries), who was fifteenth.
