THE husband of a woman who was killed when the car he was driving collided with her on a country road is to appear in court in connection with the incident.
Dumfries and Galloway Police confirmed yesterday that a 43-year-old man had been bailed to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court in connection with the death of Mrs Jessie Black, 39, of Mill Cottage, Shencastle Farm, Moniaive, Dumfries-shire.
Mrs Black died shortly after leaving a 40th birthday celebration she attended with her husband Mr Peter Black, 43 in Moniaive.
The tragic collision occurred about 2am on Saturday on the A702 road, about 800 yards outside Moniaive, near the cottage which the couple had been renting temporarily while a home was being built for them in the village.
The road remained closed to traffic until yesterday to allow police to carry out investigations.
The couple's son Jim, 22, who works in Edinburgh, and their daughter Catherine, 23, who also lives on the estate, were said to be grief-stricken.
Villagers in Moniaive, which has a population of about 300, were also said to be stunned. A relative of the couple said: ''Everyone is devastated. It's a terrible tragedy for the family and all their friends.''
Mrs Black was well known in Moniaive, where she and her husband used to own a garage and ran a horse and carriage service for weddings. They also competed in horse-drawn carriage events throughout the country.
She worked as a financial officer with Dumfries and Galloway Tourist Board and heard on Friday that she had been promoted to financial controller. Mr Black is a school bus driver.
Meanwhile, Scotland's roads claimed three other lives at the weekend.
Mr Alan Kilby, 50, was killed instantly on Saturday when his car left the A726 Strathaven Road, near East Kilbride.
His daughter, Alana, 16, who was in the car, suffered cuts and bruises. She was being comforted at the family home in Finnart Place, Strathaven, yesterday by her mother, Helen, 48, and soldier brother, Billy, 26.
Northern Constabulary yesterday said that retired stonemason, Mr Frank Finley, 65, was killed on Saturday when his car crashed off the A98 Cullen to Portsoy road in Banffshire, and landed on its roof.
Police said the accident occurred less than one mile from Mr Finley's home at Seatown in Cullen.
A young man who was killed in Hamilton on Friday evening when the vehicle he was driving apparently went out of control has been named by Strathclyde Police as Mr Stewart Dowie, 22, of Kirk Street, Motherwell.
Police said two passengers suffered serious injuries in the accident which occurred in Newhousemill Road, Hamilton. No other car was involved. Both were said yesterday to be in a stable condition in Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride.
