WALL Street stocks ended little changed yesterday after Federal Reserve policy-makers decided to hold interest rates steady.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 3.74 points at 9054.65, after earlier climbing more than 50 points. The Nasdaq index gained 14.48 points, or 0.79%, to 1846.10.

The market was supported by a rebound overnight in Asian and European markets after

Indonesia's President Suharto said he would step down amid mounting opposition to his rule.

''At least short term, the worst seems to be over,'' Michael Metz, managing director at CIBC Oppenheimer & Co, said.

However, some analysts said they expected the recovery of Asian markets to be short-lived.
