STIRLING Council workers are to stage a one-day strike next Thursday following the breakdown of talks over compulsory sackings. More than 1500 employees, could join the action.

Officials of the public service union Unison walked out of talks yesterday after chiefs at the Labour-controlled council refused to compromise over the planned job cuts. The council wants to implement 20 compulsory job cuts in a bid to save #500,000 in the current financial year.

Members will discuss further action at a mass meeting today.

The council's resources committee chairman Tom Coll, said last night: ''We do not have the budget to cover these posts and we feel it is important to select those who will be given compulsory redundancy to overcome the uncertainty that has affected a far larger number of staff.''
