PEOPLE here in north-west Glasgow must be jumping for joy. They are first in line to become one of Glasgow's inner city ''new towns''. Millions of pounds, we are told, are to be spent in Ruchill and Possil, on a development that includes ''schools, shops, playparks, and trees''.

But wait a minute, haven't the same Glasgow councillors just decided to close the two secondary schools serving these areas, North Kelvinside and St Augustine's?

We are told that this council wants to crack down on wastage and manage the city's finances better. Why, then, is it closing perfectly good schools in the areas where it is promising developments that include schools? Is it proposing to knock down schools and then spend more of our money building more schools to cope with the extra demand created by these ''new towns''?

Surely it makes more sense to keep these excellent facilities, as it seems obvious we are going to need them.
