A young mother was yesterday hailed as a heroine after rescuing her three young children from their burning home.

Ms Michelle Rennie, 27, fought her way through thick smoke and intense heat to get Ryan, five, Graham, four, and Ceranne, 18 months, out of the ground floor flat.

Yesterday a neighbour said: ''The courage of that woman was unbelievable. I have no idea how she did it. The smoke in the close was really thick. God knows what it must have been like in her flat.''

The fire, at Hamilton Road, Broomhouse, Glasgow, started early yesterday. Ms Rennie was recovering in hospital from the effects of smoke inhalation. The children were treated and later released. The cause of the blaze is not thought to be suspicious.
