FATHER and son team John and Andrew Hornall of Falleninch, Stirling, won the Royal Show Charolais championship with a five-year-old stock bull, Chesham Hercules, which was bought for 5000gns in Perth in 1993 and was bred by A Harman.

The Hornalls also had the reserve, a seven-year old cow, Cambusbarron Faye, which was this year's Highland Show champion. She was bought for 5000gns at the Cambusbarron dispersal five years ago.

Champion in the Limousins was David Dick of Mains of Throsk, near Stirling, with a cow, Ronwick Janita, which won the Limousin 2000 event and was breed reserve at the Highland Show behind her mother, Ronwick Danita. The reserve champion was a 27-month-old heifer from Christine Williams of Lodge Hill, Shifnal, Shropshire.

The Aberdeen-Angus champion was a three-year-old Canadian-bred bull, Royal Westerner, which was reserve male champion at the Highland Show. The owner is Robert Lane of Windy Meadow Farm, Edgmond, Shropshire. The reserve was a four-year-old cow, Netherton Fleur, shown by W&D McLaren of Netherton, Blackford, Perthshire. She was Highland Show champion this year.

It was the turn of the Continental sheep to come under the eye of the judges yesterday, and one of the first victories saw British Bleu du Maine president Gavin Shanks' Bowmanhurst Carluke pick up the breed championship. His champion, a four-crop ewe bred by Percy Tait, repeated her victory at the show last year, when she also picked up top tickets at both the Highland and Welsh shows.

In the Charollais lines, Dunblane breeder Robert Paterson and his parents, Robert and Maimie, took the championship with their two-crop ewe, Auchenlay Grace. This one, by a son of Manxman Nessie, stood reserve interbreed champion at the Highland Show.

Scottish Texel breeders filled the top two slots in the breed championship.

Tommy MacTaggart of Rascarrel, Castle Douglas, took the championship with his ewe, and Keith Jamieson, Woodhead, Annan picked up the reserve with his gimmer.

The Suffolk breed championship was won by John Sinnett, of Stockton Court, Worcester. His champion, a ewe lamb, is by the #23,000 Cairness Goldeneye.

A shearling ewe by the #5000 Greyhill Napper, shown by Sandy Fraser of Low Santon, Scunthorpe, stood as breed reserve.

In dairy, Jack Rennie of Brocklehill, Ayr, saw his second calver, Brocklehill Leova, take the Ayrshire award to repeat his success of last year. Leova is by the red Holstein sire Masal TTTT Rosario Red.
