There were champagne celebrations for Jack Berry at Redcar yesterday.

He was presented with a bottle of bubbly after landing the 1500th winner of his training career. Fittingly, it was a two-year-old who took him to the landmark, as Red Charger battled on well to beat Dispol Clan.

Berry, 60, is now best known for his handling of two-year-olds. He set a record for the most juvenile winners in a season (63) in 1989 and broke it himself in each of the next two years.

Leading juveniles to emerge from Cockerham include Paris House, Distinctly North, and Mind Games. Berry's other forte is sprinters and he is quick to nominate his favourite race as the Ayr Gold Cup, which he won with So Careful in 1988.

He was awarded an MBE by the Queen in recognition of his tireless work for charity, particularly the Injured Jockeys' Fund.

This season he has been entrusted with the honour of training for Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson. Typically, he has sent out the two-year-old Queensland Star to win twice from two starts.
