AN elderly driver who turned left at a level crossing and drove along the main railway line between Edinburgh and the north for more than 95 yards was yesterday ordered to see an eye specialist.

Stirling Sheriff Court was told that George Sneddon, 76, mistook the railway for a side road when he was blinded by oncoming lights. He told police that he immediately realised his mistake, but once the wheels of his car caught the track, he could not steer. Sneddon, of Hazelbank Gardens, Raploch, Stirling, earlier admitted careless driving and was told by Sheriff Robert Younger that, although a report from his GP suggested he was not suffering from any neurological impairement, the doctor had suggested a further report from an opthalmic specialist.

Sentence on Sneddon, who first appeared in court last month, was further deferred until June 3.
