World No.1 Annika Sorenstam has confirmed that she will play her first tournament in Scotland at the McDonald's WPGA Championship at Gleneagles from August 6-9.

''I've heard good things about the event,'' she said. ''This year I've decided to play in Scotland instead of the Evian Masters because it will be the first of a three-week run. I'll be playing the British Open the following week and then the Compaq Open in Sweden.''

This week, Sorenstam, who has finished in the top 10 in all her eight events on the LPGA American Tour this season, will be one of the favourites for the Gleneagles American equivalent, the McDonald's LPGA Championship at Wilmington in Delaware.

It is the second major of the women's season and the field includes Catriona Matthew and Kathryn Marshall. A third Scot, Janice Moodie, the leader of the LPGA Rookie of the Year rankings, is also hoping to reach the starting line-up. Yesterday, she was second reserve.
