A GRADUATE trainee who claimed she was not offered a permanent job as she was pregnant has won her sex discrimination case and #1500 compensation for injury to her feelings.

An industrial tribunal in Dundee has also continued the case brought by Miss Joanna Phillips against Promat Engineering Services Ltd to decide what compensation she is due for her financial loss.

Miss Phillips, 30, of Ambrose Street, Broughty Ferry, Dundee, joined the company on a year's placement after graduating.

She told the tribunal she and her boyfriend decided to start a family in the light of assurances she would be offered a permanent position. She discovered she was pregnant in October 1996 but decided not to tell the company for a few months.

Later managing director Iain Kirkwood told her days before Christmas there was no permanent position available for her.

She claimed when she told David Clark, the sales and commercial director that she was pregnant, he replied ''You silly girl.''

She was offered a short-term contract on a self-employed basis.

The company claimed it was not aware she was pregnant at the time the decision was made and denied she had been assured a permanent position.

The tribunal said minutes of meetings confirmed she would be offered a permanent position and the tribunal concluded that the directors knew she was pregnant before they decided not to offer her such a post.
