Double act: two academics are to become the heads of their respective churches this year. The Rev Professor Alan Main, 61, left, of Aberdeen University, is to be the next Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. His divinity colleague at the university, the Rev Professor Peter Stephens, 63, will be President of the Methodist Conference.

We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
