n THE Herald reported: ''Many drug addicts would welcome life imprisonment, confiscation of assets, and perhaps even death sentences for long-time professional suppliers, according to a Glasgow lawyer. But they feel the courts are too hard on small-time 'addict dealers' and think more residential centres should be provided to rehabilitate drug addicts. These are two of the findings in a series of interviews carried out with drug addicts by Mr Ross Harper. A survey of his research is published in the journal of the Law Society of Scotland issued yesterday.''

n IN A leader, The Herald commented: ''What price now the future of Scott Lithgow as a major employer in the economic disaster area of the Lower Clyde? Today's disclosure of enormous financial outlays for which the management is likely to be liable is an ominous turn of events for the yard and invites a sense of foreboding about unemployment levels in Greenock and Port Glasgow. It is a sad trend of events for an employer which is crucial to the wellbeing of a large section of the West of Scotland community. Much has gone wrong since the days, not so many years ago, when 10,000 men worked in the yards of Greenock and Port Glasgow.''

n LEITH Labour MP Ron Brown was attacked and robbed near his London home. ''Mr Brown, who has close links with Colonel Gadaffi, said he did not rule out a Middle East connection. He was attacked by two men who took money and personal documents.''
