BellSouth Classic

Sandy Lyle's sad story continued when he slumped to a three-over-par 75 in the second round at the BellSouth Atlanta Classic in Georgia yesterday.

The Scot double-bogeyed his penultimate hole, the par-four seventeenth, to post a one-over 145 total, which looks like missing the cut by one stroke.

However, only of half the field completed the second round on the waterlogged Sugarloaf TPC course yesterday, so the cut will not be decided until the other half finish this morning.

''It's a little discouraging. I hit a couple of bad tee shots and got hammered both times,'' admitted Lyle.

Earlier, he had completed the weather-delayed first round with a promising 70, his best score in his past 17 rounds on the US Tour. Lyle birdied the first hole of the second round and remained three under at the turn, but dropped four strokes on the back nine as he limped home in 40.

If, as expected, Lyle fails to qualify for the final two rounds, it will be his fourth missed cut in a row.

Meanwhile, former Scottish Open champion Craig Parry shot his best round of the year on the US Tour, a six-under 66, to earn a share of the clubhouse lead with Jay Don Blake (68).

The pair were at nine-under 135, one stroke ahead of John Huston with half the field back in the clubhouse. Parry had two eagles, at the par-five eighteenth, where he sank a wedge from 110 yards, and at the par-five fourth, where he chipped in from 16 yards.

Parry is still seeking his first victory in America. ''It's driving me nuts,'' he said. ''I'd love to win over here.''
