The EU-approved British passport, which replaced the traditional dark blue passport in 1992, is to be redesigned following complaints from immigration officers that it is too vulnerable to fraudsters.
The photograph and personal data are to be moved from the inside back cover - made of stiff card - to an inside page made of thin paper, in the hope that alterations will be easier to spot.
