aON May 1 you carried a brief news item on the proposed ''Erotica'' sex exhibition at the SECC.

As Glasgow's newest councillor, I believe I was elected in January in order to help make Glasgow better. The people of this city want better schools, council houses in better condition, roads repaired, etc. They are also wanting the reputation of this city to be improved. For too long Glasgow has had a very negative image both in this country and further afield.

Amsterdam is a great city whose image has been tarnished by the sex industry there. If you say you are going to Amsterdam for the weekend, folk are likely to joke about what you will be doing there! Surely this is not the kind of reputation we want Glasgow to have?

It is more than just religious groups who have serious reservations. There is concern that violence against women and abuse of children are likely to be encouraged by an event like this. It is one thing for individuals to quietly buy explicit magazines, etc, in a small shop or by mail-order. Surely it is quite another for Glasgow's main exhibition centre to be used to promote the sex industry in this way.

Councillor John Mason,

83 Sandaig Road, Glasgow.
