SCOTLAND suffered a disappointing 6-2 defeat against England in their opening match of the Israeli International Youth Tournament in Ra'anana yesterday, losing out in the last bowl.

Scotland had put the first points on the board when Billy Mellors took the singles with a 25-20 victory over Ian Jenkins. However, with Scotland's triple side of Steven Glen, Darren Burnett, and Scott Dodds heading for defeat, it was all down to the pairs clash between Andrew Lauder and Graeme Campbell and England's Darren Holder and Dion Auckland.

In a top-class encounter, there was never more than a few shots in it and, with four ends to play, England showed ahead 13-9. The Scots dug deep to pick up an eighteenth-end double, and added singles on the next two to go into the last end tied at 13-13, but it was England who captured the match 16-13.

The triples lost out 12-19 to England, skipped by Ian Mayne.

In yesterday's other match, Wales beat South Africa, also on a 6-2 scoreline, picking up points in the singles and triples, and a two-point bonus for winning. Results:

England 6, Scotland 2 (singles I Jenkins 20, D Mellors 25; pairs - D Holder and D Auckland 16, A Lauder and G Campbell 13; triples - N Karge, A Hollis, I Mayne 19, S Glen, D Burnett, S Dodds 12). qSCOTLAND lost their first Test match against Australia, when they went down by two matches to one in Warilla yesterday. Willie Wood salvaged some pride for the visitors when he beat Steve Glasson 7-5, 7-6, 7-5 in the concluding singles, but wins in the pairs and triples assured Australia of overall victory.

In the pairs, Kenny Logan and George Adrain were defeated 25-9 by Kelvin Kerkow and Rex Johnston, while in the triples, Kerkow, Glasson, and Johnston wrapped up overall victory with an 18-13 win over Logan, Wood, and Adrain.
