Perhaps the most interesting aspect of your System Three opinion poll (SNP surges ahead, May 6) is the lack of response from the Liberal Democrats. The Lib-Dems have consistently maintained that they would not enter a coalition with the SNP if a precondition was a referendum on Scottish independence.

The figures in your poll imply that a Lib/Lab pact would secure only a minority administration, and this would almost certainly be unable to form a Government. The only option left for the Lib-Dems would be to enter a coalition with the SNP regardless of the preconditions. I wait with bated breath to hear how Lib-Dem spin doctors handle this one.
