If the powers that be in Scottish Gymnastics are successful in a lobby to increase the allocation of Commonwealth Games places then Craig Barry and Jamie Barlow will have the chance to earn the trip of their young lives at next month's National Championships in Perth.

Steve Frew, John Mutch and Barry Collie are the three Scottish men pre-selected for the Games in Kuala Lumpur in September, but Craig and Jamie, both 14, will be vying with Dunfermline's Andrew Buchanan for any extra spots.

As things stand, it is likely that four men will be sent to the Games, although that could still change. Scottish officials believe that England and Wales have got it right by sending full teams of five men, five women and four in the rhythmic discipline.

''We certainly want to send a minimum of 11 so that we can compete in the team events,'' said Scotland's Director of Gym-nastics, John White. ''The numbers were based on performances at the last games. But we've moved on a lot since then and now we have the chance to pick up medals.''

Craig and Jamie, whose families come from Musselburgh and Glasgow respectively, have both won medals when representing Britain at junior level in international events overseas. They both train with Scot Trevor Low at a club in Hinckley, Leicestershire where Barry Collie is also based.

''It would be a terrific experience for the youngsters if they do make it to the games, White said. ''Steve Frew (Scottish No.1) has a real medal chance in individual events but, if he hasn't competed in the team championship he will be at a huge disadvantage.''
