Two men who punched and kicked a man as he lay against a burning fire have been banned from drinking in the local pub where the attack took place.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard how both had continued to assault Mr George Fleck after he fell against a solid fuel fire and lay cowering on the ground in the pool room of the Cross Keys pub in Eaglesham last November.

Mr Fleck was continually hit with pool cues and could not escape as he lay against the stove.

Once taken to Hairmyres Hospital, doctors found one side of his body had been ''branded'' by the metal grille on the front of the solid fuel fire.

Stuart McLachlan, 29, of 243 Bonnyton Drive, and Darren Maxwell, 26, of 3 Park Crescent, both Eaglesham, were told by Sheriff Bill Dunlop that if they returned to the pub within the next year they would be prosecuted for committing an offence under the exclusion order he imposed.

He said: ''You are banned from going there and must not enter the premses without the express permission of the licensee.''

He also fined each man #300 and ordered them each to pay #500 compensation to Mr Fleck.

The court was told that trouble flared after a pint of beer belonging to the other man had been spilled. McLachlan offered to replace it and did so. But when it too was knocked over, McLachlan and his co-accused set about him.

Depute fiscal Lesley Thompson said the injured man finally managed to escape outside to dial 999 from a phone box.

When examined by medical staff in hospital, they found sear marks running along his side to his buttocks which showed the pattern of the metal in front of the fire. The burns became infected and he had to return to hospital four times for treatment.

Both accused pleaded guilty to assaulting the other man by repeatedly punching and kicking him and causing him to fall against a fire where they repeatedly struck him on the body with pool cues to his injury.

Sheriff Dunlop ordered McLachlan, a manager in a vehicle accident repair shop, to pay #25 per week. Maxwell, a manager in a removal firm, must pay instalments of #75 a month.
